PADI Divemaster, EFR Instructor

Student Comments:

I had been looking to find out what Tech Diving was about and the Intro to Tech course gave me the insight to see if this was the right direction.  I first thought this course was just an unnecessary "transition course” into Tech Diving that could easily be included into one of the other curriculums.  After the first pool session I knew I was wrong.  Bruce has the patience, skills and knowledge to effectively teach you what you need to know.  In addition, the skills are videotaped so you can critique and modify any aspect of your technique from body position to SMB deployment.  This course is made for the diver who is on their way to trimix certification or someone who is looking to challenge themselves and improve their skills to be a better diver.

Student Comments:

Finished my open water class on June 11,2005. After a bunch more training (Advanced Open Water, EFR, Nitrox, Boat Specialty, DAN O2, Rescue) I decided to take Bruce's Intro to Tech course. I thought my buoyancy was getting pretty good until this class. After finishing this class and 140 dives, I'm glad to say it's much improved. Needless to say, I'm hooked on this stuff and plan to continue my training.

Student Comments:

I was certified in August of 06 and have been hooked ever since.  After reading "The Last Dive" and "Caverns Measureless to Man" I became very interested in technical diving. I can't wait to get inside the wrecks and caves (after proper training, of course).

After 100 dives I thought I had this diving thing down. After the first pool session with Bruce I realized I was wrong. Thank god for the private student section - that video was really bad. Bruce is an excellent instructor and I look forward to continuing my training with SCTD.

Student Comments:

After my initial certification in June 2006, I quickly found myself interested in wreck diving and lobstering. While both can be done and enjoyed well within recreational limits, I am driven to conduct longer dives and explore deeper wrecks.

Bruce and the Intro to Tech course provided me with the knowledge and skills to prepare for the rigors Technical Diving. The SCTD staff and graduates offer a supportive network, while the private Student Forum gives you the opportunity to view your practice videos, schedule practice dives, debrief and seek advice. The flexible scheduling and extensive experience that Bruce brings to the table is invaluable. For this and the many reasons mentioned by the other graduates, I plan to continue my training with SCTD.

Student Comments:

One need only look on this page – or ask around among his peers in the technical diving community – to learn the kind of first-rate training that Bruce provides.

For myself, my initial goals were two-fold - diving on my monthly trips from Asia to Los Angeles, and adding some cold-water diving experience to my logbook.

The excellent technical instruction and invaluable experience I have since gained from Bruce have far exceeded these expectations.  When one dives with SoCalTecDivers, however, the learning does not begin and end with Bruce.  Indeed, all of the divers in the SCTD group may be counted on to provide assistance and ‘helpful hints’ on every dive – invaluable in allowing this newcomer to become comfortable in the unique technical diving environment here in California.  Perhaps most importantly, each of them have helped me “learn what I need to learn” as I gain more experience and move forward in my technical training.

Whether you seek top-notch instruction – or are already a technical diver looking for new diving opportunities – it would be difficult to find a better group than this.  Thus can only I recommend SCTD – SoCalTecDivers – without reservation, and hope that you will join in soon.

Student Comments:

I did my first open water dive on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and was immediately hooked on diving.  Upon returning home, I got my open water certification and found that diving in California to be equally rewarding.  I continued my diving education and practiced my skills while enjoying sites in Californa as well as warm water destinations including Hawaii, Roatan, Belize, La Paz, Cayman Islands, and the Bahamas.

Initially I sought out technical diving as a way to become a better diver.  Attracted by the strict discipline of technical diving, I began the classes with SCTD.  What I liked about Bruce’s approach is the balance between a strong understanding of the academics coupled with practical in-water application of the skills and training.  Bruce is very patient in his style of instruction offering constructive advice to build the knowledge base, skills, and confidence required of technical diving.  I can say that the classes with SCTD has definitely made me a better diver and well prepared me for the rigors of technical diving.

Student Comments:

I became certified in the middle of 2000.  I was taught from the beginning to look at things from a more serious side...safety and not taking things for granted.  I knew early on that the “normal” type of diving wasn’t for me.  I didn’t just want to jump off the cattle boat and hope that I made it back with “500” PSI!  What a joke!  There had to be a better, safer, more productive way.  After meeting Bruce And his super buddy “Terry”, I knew that I wanted to dive and train with them.  I am lucky so far that they let me dive with them and that Bruce has mercy and trains me.....  Always on the conservative side, I do not like to take what I feel are chances.  Take that for what it is.  Of course everyone has a different view on what those are.  All in all, I very much enjoy being under water and the diving and training with the SoCal Tec Divers crew.

Student Comments:

In taking SoCal Tec Divers Intro to Tech Course it has really helped me to focus more on Team diving and not as an individual. It has also helped me to develop an awareness to be more focused on the dive objective (Dive Plan) vs. your plain old Recreational type of dive where you turn your dive when you get low on air. In my opinion this has been one of the best diving experiences to date. It has brought great rewards by allowing to meet some great people and learn some valuable Skill Sets and also shown me some humility as thought I was a pretty good diver (as being a Recreational SCUBA Instructor myself )and having you faults pointed out to you can be difficult. So in summary if you have an interest in this type of diving and are willing to take a step in the Tech World or even want to improve you diving skills come and see SoCal Tec Divers. I can hardly wait to take his more advanced classes.

Student Comments:

What I got out of SCTD training is exactly what I wanted: a challenge. Bruce's approach to decompression theory and dive planning is thorough and practical. Throughout our numerous dives we applied all of the principles discussed during our lessons, and I also learned from observing and diving with the SCTD team. The training is a serious commitment and it is meant to take you out of your comfort zone. I look forward to applying what I have learned diving new wrecks and new cave systems.

Student Comments:

When you feel ready to take the next step from recreational to technical diving the Intro to Tech course bridges the gap perfectly. This course helped me develop the basic skills and a really good foundation to move into technical diving. It was hard work but I thoroughly enjoyed it. A great deal of Bruce's time and effort goes into you passing this course. The skills I learned in this course will help me in all the areas of my diving, including wreck, cave, and deep diving. I can't wait to move onto the challenge of the full tech course but I feel secure that I've found in Bruce a highly trained instructor to help me master the skills necessary to become a good technical diver. If you are looking for a real challenge that's also fun , this is the course for you.

Student Comments:

Bruce provided me with thorough instruction backed with the practical knowledge that only comes with years of diving experience. Entering the world of technical diving requires a commitment to learning and safety. Our classes were never rushed and Bruce always made sure we understood the material before moving on to new subject matter. Our practical dives were conducted in the same professional manner. Training with Bruce has given me the confidence to continue with my technical diving education.
